How to Register to Vote in 7 Easy Steps
Step 1: Learn about Your State’s Registration Rules
First, find out the registration rules for your state. Visit the voter’s registration website and click on your state to find out how to register to vote.
Step 2: Find out If You Are Eligible to Register
The next important step is finding out if you CAN vote. Find out who can register to vote in your state, as well as their minimum requirements, such as:
- U.S. citizenship
- At least 18 years old on or before Election Day
- Meeting the state’s residency requirements
Step 3: Register Online or in Person
Next, it’s time to decide if you’re going to register online or in person. Some states offer both options:
To Register Online
- Go to your state’s voter registration website.
- Download the National Mail Voter Registration Form and fill it out online.
- You can also print the form, fill it out, and mail it to the address listed for your state.
To Register In Person
- Go to your state or local election office. You can also go to other public facilities such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, armed services recruitment centers, or state and country public assistance offices.
- Fill out a National Mail Voter Registration Form and hand it in.
Step 4: Fill out the National Mail Voter Registration Form
To get a form, download the form in English or in nine other languages. After receiving it online or in person, fill out your basic information, address, and choice of party. Most importantly, don’t forget to sign the form before you hand it in.
Step 5: Submit Your Form before the Deadline
Most states set the deadline for application a month before the next election. Make sure to check your state’s website to find out and send or mail your registration form before the deadline.
Step 6: Check in on Your Registration
It usually takes a few weeks for your voter’s card to arrive by mail. But you can always check the status of your registration online or by contacting your state or local election office.
Step 7: Eligible to Vote
The final step is exercising your right to vote! You can vote in the next election once your registration status has been approved. You can vote without a voter registration card but make sure to bring any government ID to confirm your identity.
